Flame Loss During Operation
The boiler ignited successfully but then lost the flame during operation. Very common in winter due to frozen condensate pipes.
In cold snaps, EA 229 is almost always a frozen condensate pipe. Thaw with warm water — do not use boiling water as it can crack the pipe.
Step-by-Step Fix Guide
-
Step 1
Check for a frozen condensate pipe first (most common winter cause)
-
Step 2
Thaw the pipe with warm water if frozen
-
Step 3
Reset the boiler once
-
Step 4
If the fault persists in warmer weather, call a Gas Safe engineer to check gas pressure and the gas valve
Work on gas appliances must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The steps above cover safe checks a homeowner can perform - any internal component replacement requires a qualified professional. If in doubt, always call an engineer.
