Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about using the Boiler Fault Finder.
Using the Fault Finder
Yes - completely free with no registration or account required. We believe everyone should have access to clear information about their heating system.
We cover all major UK boiler manufacturers including Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Ideal, Alpha, Glow-worm, Potterton, Ferroli, Ariston, Viessmann, Vokera, Intergas, Keston, Navien, and many more - over 18 brands with 570+ fault codes.
Your fault code will be displayed on your boiler's digital screen or control panel. It is usually a letter followed by numbers (e.g. F75, E119, EA 227) or just numbers (e.g. 133). Check your boiler display and enter it exactly as shown.
Our database is constantly expanding. If your code isn't listed, try browsing your brand page for all known codes. You can also contact us to request a specific code is added.
Our data is compiled from manufacturer technical documentation, Gas Safe engineer guidance, and technical publications. While we strive for accuracy, fault code meanings can vary between model generations. Always verify with your boiler's manual.
Boiler Repairs & Safety
Some checks are safe for homeowners - topping up pressure, resetting the boiler, or thawing a frozen condensate pipe. Any work involving the boiler's internals, gas supply, or electrical components must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Each fix guide clearly labels which steps are DIY-safe.
Gas Safe registered engineers are legally authorised to work on gas appliances in the UK. Registration means they've been independently assessed and certified for safe gas work. Always check an engineer's Gas Safe ID card before allowing them to work on your boiler.
You can find a vetted local engineer through our partner directory at LocalPlumbersLtd.co.uk. All listed engineers are Gas Safe registered and have been vetted for quality.
If a fault code keeps returning after resetting, the underlying issue hasn't been resolved. Don't keep resetting without addressing the root cause. Call a Gas Safe registered engineer to properly diagnose and repair the fault.
It depends on the severity. Low-severity codes (like a pressure warning) may allow continued use once you've resolved the issue. High-severity codes (overheat, gas valve fault, false flame) mean you should turn off the boiler immediately and call an engineer. Check the severity rating on each fault code page.
